  1. SENSITIVE AREAS IN NEED OF SPECIAL PROTECTION

In the southern coast of Cyprus there two Mediterranean Specially Protected Areas: Larnaca Lake Nature Reserve and Limassol (Akrotiri) Lake Nature Reserve. In addition, the Lara-Toxeftra area beaches, NW of Paphos, are protected area under the Fisheries Law.

The Larnaca Lake complex has an area of 668 hectares and extends from 2 to 7km south of the town. In the old times the lakes were in communication with the sea. The lakes and their surroundings create an extraordinary ecosystem which is the habitat of rare migratory birds such as flamingos and wild ducks; the area has also an important vegetation.

The Limassol (Akrotiri) Lake has an area of 2,000 hectares. It is situated in the Akrotiri peninsula about 14 km south-west of Limassol. The lake is a prominent ecological biotope and is the overwintering area for Flamingo and other birds and the stop-over place of many species of migratory birds. The lake has no permanent connection with the sea but during rough weather the sea water occasionally enters into lake through two low points of the sandy strip at the south end of Ladies Mile beach.

Lara-Toxeftra beaches are unspoiled beaches with sand-dunes. which are of national ecological importance as Green and Loggerhead turtle nesting beaches. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nest regularly on these beaches which and are strictly protected by law. The Protected Area is 9km long.
